Here is some of the reaction to early performances of The Time Traveller.
"Just to say thank you so much for a wonderful evening on Wednesday - we all absolutely loved the Time Traveller and my 12 year old is still singing about DNA! It was really brilliant."
"Thank you for a splendid evening of entertainment last night. We thoroughly enjoyed it."
"My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance last night at Grimsdyke. I was particularly impressed how both words and music were written in exactly the appropriate style without a hint of direct imitation. The use of Gilbertian rhyming, 'station' 'occupation' etc was suble but present. This connection was even more noticable to me in the music which again and again caused me to smile in recognition of some delighful piece of homage to Sullivan."
"That was marvellous!!! I can't tell you how much we three enjoyed your mini opera this evening. I was humming the music all the way home."
"I do think The Time Traveller would make a splendid introduction to operetta (or even opera, used loosely) for children. It’s short enough to sustain interest for non-musicians, the plot is lively and topical and the characters are admirably defined. The acting is strong – particularly that of the scientist – and the characterisation completely convincing. I enjoyed the references to G&S , both in the plot and the music - they leant an extra dimension to the performance, and the literary and musical quality of both the libretto and the setting was notable. The singing was splendid, ranging from beautiful bel canto to comic style, as the plot demanded. Congratulations. I look forward to the sequel!"
"I think it would make a brilliant introduction to opera for children. I took my son who is thirteen years old to see the production at the Grimsdyke not really expecting him to enjoy it, but I was totally mistaken - he loved it. He loved the modern day references and enjoyed the combination of a fairly simple story line with quite complicated detail. He loved the original use of words and phrasing so much that he is still able to remember lines from it today."
"I just loved it! I think the whole feel of the production was Gilbert and Sullivan at its best. The story was fun and witty and memorable. I was entranced from the moment it started, I didn't want to miss a thing and left wondering what was going to happen next!"
"My favourite moment was hearing the DNA song - I thought it was inspired and totally brilliant. My son still remembers the words of the song even though we saw the Time Traveller some time ago. I think it is a tribute to the writers (and of course performers) that the lyrics are so memorable."
